We should like to invite Arts Society members to visit the Trigge Library.  It is not a big space so we can take a maximum of twelve people on the following Saturdays at 10am:

I would suggest half an hour would be sufficient.  Please be aware that entrance to the library is via spiral stone staircase. The mark of a good visit arranger is to bring home the same number of visitors you took out and if that was the only criterion, then the visit by 47 members and friends of Grantham's Art Society must be judged a success!

With A&P offering their usual standard of excellent service, we arrived in Saltaire on time and were very soon admiring the many art works donated to the gallery by local artist David Hockney before ascending to the third floor and enjoying a lovely lunch in the 'Cafe in to the Opera' of soup of the day [cauliflower and Cheddar cheese if you are curious] polished off with a Gluten Free chocolate and orange tart.

Despite the cold in the cinema room, the short film was well worth watching to learn something about Sir Titus Salt and his Victorian drive to move the factory and its workers from the grime and insanitary conditions of nearby Bradford to more wholesome grounds further up the Aire Valley with his factory completed in 1853.  Within a single building the 13 operations required to convert wool into the finest Worsted cloth were housed with, close by, wholesome accommodation for the factory workers and their families including a church as well as educational and training establishments plus parkland.

Although the manufacturing trade closed down due to the price of cheap imports, a local entrepreneur, Jonathan Silver, acquired what had become a derelict building and has given it a new lease of life in which much of David Hockney's work is displayed.

We came home clutching our treasures - postcards of some of Hockney's works and a copy of Alan Bennett's 'The Choral' - parts of which were filmed in Saltaire generally and in the Victoria Hall in particular.

If you missed the day,but would like to visit just catch an LNER train to Leeds and an onward Northern service to Saltaire and the steps from the station bring you to Salts Mill and all its delights.

Stuart Hadley - 'novice' Visit Arranger 

Jane Hindmarch is a member of Stamford Arts Society and has a forthcoming exhibition at Stamford Arts Centre.  In Arcadia Ego - I Am In Paradise - is an exhibition of drawing, painting and sculpture inspired by visits to Arcadia Garden in Sheffield, the collection explores the garden as a metaphor for life’s changing seasons - a space of beauty, growth, stillness and renewal.

On a beautifully sunny day, 46 members of TAS Grantham visited the wonderfully named Burton Agnes Hall, Driffield, a house of immense charm and character.  We had a short introductory talk in the Tudor Hall and then at our leisure enjoyed three floors of treasures, original architecture, including Elizabeathan plasterwork, and many modern paintings.  The highlight was the Long Gallery on the third floor which has been recently renovated and housed recent furniture and sculptural commissions, and afforded a superb panoramic view over the local countryside.

The award winning gardens offered an opportunity to explore the woodland walk, admire the walled garden with its array of giant games and to wind your way through the yew maze.  The Carriage House cafe provided a delicious range of wood fired sandwiches and tasty treats to be eaten in the outdoor area, making the most of the sunshine.  Needless to say, many purchases were made from the plant stalls in the courtyard and stored in the luggage space on the coach for the return journey to Grantham!

This Lincolnshire Heritage Day is packed with all day attractions including traditional craftmanship, interactive floral arcitecture display and trails around the church.  Refreshments are available and parking is at the Village Hall.  The highlight of the day is a talk by Dr James Wright on Historic Building Mythbusting in Lincolnshire at 2pm.  Entry is free.

Pamela Campbell-Johnston took us on a fascinating journey firstly through the origins of Art Deco with a session on the Paris Expo of 1925.  Then, after a coffee break, she examined the differences between Art Nouveau and Art Deco and ensured that we understood how to identify 1920s and 1930s Art Deco through architecture and objets d'art.  In the final session after lunch, she delved into the life and art of Marion Dorn, especially focusing on her commissioned rugs, their style, pattern and colour and her influence on the world of textiles.

Pamela also brough some wonderful artefacts to illustratate her lecture and her audience appreciated and thoroughly enjoyed her passion, knowledge and an excellent special interest day.

With a wealth of cultural events available, Leeds is an excellent destination for a day trip.  Around 40 people took advantage of coach laid on by The Arts Society Grantham for a super day out on Thursday 30th Janaury.  Thank you so much to Pauline Imber and Audrey Mitchell for organising another successful trip for our Society members and friends.

Thank you to everyone who joined members of the committee for a finger buffet lunch in the Ballroom after our January lecture today.  It was good to get to know new members and welcome back returnees and for new members to chat to each other.

Thank you to the committee for providing an excellent choice of sandwiches and cakes and we hope to repeat the event next year. 

Glenda also managed to sell a few more 50 Treasures books and there are now very few left from the 1,000 print run.
